As foreign language learners it’s often uncomfortable to not understand what is going on. We want to understand every word. Unfortunately this is not realistic, at most levels. The best way to approach comprehension is by trying to understand the meaning of what is being said as a whole, rather than trying to understand each word. When we get caught up on one word, we miss the rest of what is being said, therefore understand nothing. When we take the approach of understanding the point of the conversation, we get much more out of it.
So next time you’re listening to something and you hear a word you don’t know, continue listening instead of getting stuck on that one word. You are much more likely to understand the jist of the conversation. And once you hear the same word a few times, it might be the right time to look it up ☺
